Well, this was an awesome weekend!
I am working Saturdays this summer from 1-5 to cover because all of our employees are maxed out on hours due to summer daycamp. This Saturday idea was one that I had my first basketball season. We claim to be a place for families, but at that time closed at 6 every night and didn't open on Saturdays, which didn't make sense to me. After I brought up the idea, some people weren't happy - they said that we had tried it before and it hadn't worked, blah blah blah... Well I picked 1-5 because I thought those were the perfect hours for families to come up, in between lunch and dinner with the biggest attraction being the pool. Yes, there are some Saturdays that we have had NOT ONE person in the building, but it's a good time to clean or get a few things done, but overall, it's been, I believe one of my best creative decisions. Just yesterday we had about 40 people come though while also offering a lifeguard class - just awesome!
Last night we had people over for a cookout and small party and it was a lot of fun! I bought those solar lights and they have turned out to be awesome. Put them around the pool and around the back deck. Having people over always inspires me to improve my house in some way - haha! I now want to put a sound system and hang it on the garage for chill time by the pool!
Today, I played my first round of golf. We played scramble, so I have no clue how I did, but I had a blast!! I also hit a couple of decent drives and a few good putts, so I was pretty pumped. I actually want to get into it a little more, money and time permitting! The reason for the song is because of my day at the golf course - took a lot of believing to get me out there today! LOL

So much has happened...
I don't know why, but when a lot goes on, I seem to NOT write about all of it!
For a few weeks, I've been in a reflection mode for some reason. It's a bittersweet type of mood. Sort of unhappy, but fulfilled with a life that I've had the opportunity to live. For real, it's a weird type of deal.
Two weeks ago...
I hosted a All-Staff Training for BGC in Oklahoma. Staff came from everywhere in Oklahoma to learn about BGC programs and ideas, it was awesome! I was very lucky to have awesome support from other directors, regional staff and national staff of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the midst of BGC stuff, I've met so many awesome people! Teresa Walsch are the main ones - Teresa being the VP of the SW Region of BGC and Joel being our Regional Service Director. It's been an awesome experience to work with these people! I will be attending a national training soon in Padre Island!! Very excited!
My stomach problems...
Since HS, I've had a lot of stomach problems where in the middle of the night, I've had to go to the ER to get an IV of pain medicine. Long story short, I think I've figured out that the purpose of this pain is that I'm literally "FULL OF CRAP!" My primary care doctor told me that I might have an acid reflex problem, which would explain my college nights of drunken taco bell nights and falling asleep with that crap in my body - LOL! For real though, I was talking to a friend, Wade, and he has the same thing. He gets credit for the Taco Bell fourth meal comment, but it's really true. In my case, also my random trips to McDonalds - awesome LOL!
My House...
I spent Memorial Day working on my kitchen, my yard and my flower beds. It was awesome and is making for a great habit to start! Also, Tim gave us a pool! Very awesome - all we had to do is fill it and put it together. I've been in it twice now and constantly feel like I need to clean it while I'm in it!
Work!
Work is going great. I really feel like things are continuing to go on the up and up through the things we are doing at our club. We are starting new programs, the people are in the right place and the attitude is positive all around! All I feel we need to do is continue to grow and daycamp is showing proof of that happening! God has really blessed us!
Grandma's Church
My grandma goes to a church called Little Caseta (I'm sure this spelling is incorrect!). They asked me to come speak at a church camp event today and speak to their kids - ages 8 - 18 really...it was a great experience! I think I'm learning more and more which things are becoming my hobbies and what is becoming a career...I had so much fun speaking to these kids about "VISION!" Vision has always been inspired to me by Craig Grochel of Life Church and Tyler Grissom, a now I guess longtime friend from college. I really miss Tyler a lot, he was such a great person to have around and I really looked up to him a lot. He is a huge inspiration to anyone that he really meets and just has a conversation with - he's been one of the biggest influences in my life, for sure.
Teaching
WOW. If I could only really write how I have been feeling about my teaching experience lately. Tonight after an awesome class, I went to check my mailbox in the TCC office and received my spring evaluations. Phrases like "The best professor at TCC..." and "Keep up the great work, I learned more from your class than I ever have..." have really made me start thinking about my career path. Without disclosing too much online, I will say that I might have to make a very rough decision sooner than later and I've been thinking about it a lot lately with a lot of tossing and turning at night. We will see how that goes...
Director's Life?
I'm learning a lot more about becoming a director lately. It seems that since I've been here, I am doing a little more administrative "stuff" than program "stuff". I am actually really liking this responsibility more and more. I am getting to watch amazing things happen with our staff, really! People are coming out of no where to step up to the plate with leadership skills I NEVER thought I would see out of them! As I spoke with a silent mentor of mine a few weeks ago, she mentioned "Greg, for the first time in 25 years, I've built up the staff to finally become a director!" This got me to thinking about what a director of my facility should be doing...I think I've started thinking the last few months that raising money is a big part of my job, training and developing leadership, delegating with follow through, administrative work, paperwork, having fun a few times a day with the kids, getting to know the community and being involved as much as possible, being an advocate for my club on an administrative and community level and just having fun all the time. That's what I'm thinking I've decided my job is right now. I've left the color of the t-shirts, daily schedule of the kids and small details to people who really enjoy making those decisions. I feel that if I don't let these people take charge, they don't feel that they are making a difference and I mean, that's what we are all here for - making a difference however we can!
I've decided I am going to be traveling in a few weeks. Memphis to visit Logan, Stockton and possibly Amanda for a night, head to Nashville to check out Vanderbilt, Knoxville to check out UT and Montgomery for our annual family reunion with my grandma, dad and brother! I'm very excited about the trip. Seeing people and visiting with a lot of family - pretty exciting!
I'm headed to bed now...it's too late for me to be writing this!!
